Established in 1935 to preserve valuable habitat for waterfowl, the Rice Lake Wildlife Refuge is one of 560 refuges in the United States. It is open for seasonal hunting, fishing, hiking, and auto tours. It holds the record in Minnesota for the most waterfowl observed in one location at one time. In 1994, more than one million ducks—mostly ring-necked ducks— were observed at the refuge!
The refuge is also designated a “Globally Important Bird Area” by the American Bird Conservancy and is also designated a “State Important Bird Area” by the National Audubon Society. And it’s only 11 minutes from downtown McGregor!
